China's New Anti-Espionage Rules

meakermadeline

As ties are worsening between China and the United States, China has decided to increase their security through new anti-espionage rules. In this manner, China is attempting to prevent other countries (including the United States) from discovering their military, political or industrial secrets - giving China a sense of privacy. A senior official at the Ministry of State Security stated the following regarding these new rules “overseas espionage and intelligence agencies and hostile forces have intensified infiltration into China, and broadened their tactics of stealing secrets in various ways and in more fields, which poses a serious threat to China's national security and interests”. In addition, Li Wei, an expert on anti-terrorism and national security in China states “cases of Chinese people working in various industries who were wooed by money or intimidated to engage in espionage activities and became pawns of foreign spy intelligence agencies are numerous”. In this way, the Chinese government is attempting to gain more control over their people and the businesses surrounding them in order to monitor and protect Chinese and their security. This also involves reporting the activities of western entities who work within China, giving them less freedom as well. There are multiple groups that are responsible for following these rules, often involving new protocols in order to keep these rules not broken. This affects public institutions, enterprises, as well as different social groups. These groups are trained to not give away certain information especially concerning national security issues. There are workshops available for them to participate in on how to guard against foreign spying. It’s no surprise that China is buckling down on these rules, between worsening ties and as technology’s quality improves, security tends to fall short. The Chinese government is known for their hostile attitude and utilization of surveillance and how much pride they take in the security of their nation. Overall, along with the protection and security of China, these anti-espionage rules aim at spreading China’s influence while also fostering new international norms that in effect favor the Chinese order.
